Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Looking Up at Things

Walnut 26.09.2016

This is a walnut hanging quite high on a tree. I remember this photo particularly, as it was one of the first I took with my zoom lens.

Gulls in Flight

A gull in flight taken last week on a walk along the river.

Plane 19.02 (4)

I was surprised how well I managed to get the details of this plane flying above my head. We have a small local airport nearbye.

Afternoon Sun

And this is just a little extra, as I was taking photos of the sun this week for a blog and discovered that there was something else in the photo which is either the moon (in the middle of the afternoon?) or perhaps some sort of reflection on the lens – no idea.

Alps 23.02 (10)

Let’s see if I can name them, yes definitely, the three famous peaks of the Bernese Overland in Switzerland, from left to right: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and yes I have been there and seen them. We once spent a two week summer holiday in Grindelwald and had a holiday appartment with a view on the Eiger. We could see the windows of the railway hewn into the rock, the railway that arrives at the Junfrau joch. We did the railway journey to the Jungfrau. It was a fantastic view from the top, but we were in slow motion. The air is very thin on the top of those mountains, and you easily get giddy.

For this photo I did not have to go far. I took it from the hill behind where we live. On a good clear day we have a spectacular view, but it is not always as good as this robin egg blue and yes, I once saw robin’s eggs, and they are blue.

Ducks 26.02 (3)

Sometimes I feel like a duck out of water. At least they get somewhere. I seem to take three steps forward and four backwards and it all goes in slow motion, no quicken here.

This morning there was a ring at the door. Ok, no problem, that is what doorbells are for, otherwise you would not find out why the door bell was ringing. I was at the end of breakfast, in the middle of composing an important work on my computer, and there was someone at the door. It was not the immediate door, but the door at the entrance to the appartment block.Mr. Swiss was otherwise occupied in the the bathroom, so I decided to do the honours, dressed quickly in a respectable kaften and see who it was.

It was the postman and as he only rings twice I was glad to get to the door before he rang twice. I was actually expecting him, although had forgotten he was coming in a golden oldie moment. I ordered three months supply of my medicine and it was being delivered. It is always done by special delivery as I have to keep it in a freidge until being used. I have a special fridge in the cellar. I transport it into this fridge to get it out of the way and save time which meant I had to go to the basement: no problem, we have a lift. However it became a problem when I left the life and entered the cellar. I was carrying a large box in both hands, made some sort of silly step when entering the cellar door and the world turned upside down.

I grabbed out as I was falling, but did not find anything to grab, so eventually was sitting on the cellar floor, after meeting a door and a few other objects on the way. I was still breathing, had no real injuries actually, but was a little shaken. Now the next problem arrived. I cannot get up, one of my MS problems. Once I am standing, everything is OK, but I was alone and sitting on the cold cellar floor. Mr. Swiss was in the appartment and did not even know that I was in the cellar.

I had visions of being forgotten, never being found. However, never give up. I sort of managed to half crawl to he staircase.

Cellar

Yes, this staircase (the lift is next to it). I have a photo of everything. And the lift would have not been a good idea, because I would have to stand to reach the button, and I could not stand. I sat on the bottom step, hoisted myself to the next step and gripped the banister on the side. One step at a time and I was standing, really standin, what an achievement!  I was still a little shaken, but was in one piece: not even a bruise. I returned to the appartment although Mr. Swiss met me half way. we collected my medicine from the cellar floor and put it where it belonged. I am now under orders, which was more like a threat, never, ever, again to do these things on my own.

I could have knocked myself out, broken bones, and in the worst case scene, be dead, although I probably would not have noticed that one. I have decided no longer to do “quick” to quicken things up, but one step at a time.

Daily Prompt: Even quicker

Good Morning

Snowy Morning

A golden oldie priviledge is not having to do anything, because why should you. On the other hand you cannot stay in bed all day, there are things to be done and places to go, although Tuesday in not really the best day with a bathroom to clean. I decided to start the action from my pole position in bed and answer the comments that appeared during the night. It was a smooth operatrion, and I still had half an hour to hug the bed, so my decision was made.

And then the alarm sounded (bird song programmed on my various cyber devices) and it was time to rise and shine. My first action of the day, after struggling onto my feet, is open the curtains to welcome the sun. However, today was no sun, it was snowing. After a week of Spring promises, we are back to square one, although I do not think the snow will last so long. There is now a very thin layer on the grass outside.

Snow in March

It was to be expected, as we are now in the middle of our carnival programme in our area. Today is the second procession, same as the procession on Sunday, and it always rains or snows on the procession. Me? No, I stay at home or do something completely different. Carvnival is not for me, although I know a few, even some golden oldies, that still enjoy turning night into day. Mr. Swiss says because I am a Brit I do not understand the real meaning of Carnival as I did not grow up in it. He also does not partake in carnival, but he grew up surrounded by it, so something is wrong in the reasoning somewhere.

In the meanwhile I got one of those push notes on my telephone from the Swiss news. It appears today discussions are being held in our Swiss parliment about our AHV (Swiss State pension scheme) and they are talking about a 70 Swiss Franc monthly increase. Mr. Swiss said forget it, they are only talking about it, but the actual facts are still to be seen. Perhaps I should organise a golden oldie march to Bern to ensure that we get our rights. On the other hand why bother, they do what they want to do.

And now to go on a cleaning safari in the bathroom. Have fun everyone.

Crow 26.02 (3)

Ever ran out of gas in your vehicle?

Not unexpectedly, that would be a worst scene situation. I had a driving pause of 1-2 years and am now driving regularly again, but not without making sure that Mr. Swiss has left me the car with a full tank. I am not even sure if I would know how to operate the pump or what sort of gas I would need. Something about lead free I think.

Which are better: black or green olives?

I am not a great olive fan, do not mind them, but the colour makes no difference. I am more for size, and the greek olives win for me, they are bigger.

If you were a great explorer, what would you explore?

The Sargasso sea would be an interesting place to explore. To discover why so many planes disappear over the sea and why so many ships are found there without crew members still with sails set. And of course, the burning question of all time: What came first, the chicken or the egg.

Quotes List: At least three of your favorite quotes?

I never really had a favourite quote, so did a search and found three that appeal to me

“My goal this weekend is to move… just enough so people don’t think I’m dead.” What a lovely idea.

“What’s the best thing about living in Switzerland? The flag is a big plus.” – couldn’t resist that one.

“It is a far far better thing to do now than I have ever done”  when I bought a new computer.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Last week: That I could drive the car without any problems.

Looking forward to nothing in particular, but that is the pleasure of life – no stress, just take it as it comes.

Daily Prompt: On the search for the centre

Afternoon sun

I will be come famous, my name will go down in history books together with Pythagoras and Aristotle and a few others that, like me, happened to be in the right place at the right time. I was searching for a centre, any centre, but it had to be a centre, because that is what it is all about. The sun was shining, and that being the centre of our universe, I decided that a photo of the sun would be a good start to my words of wisdom.

It is not easy to take a photo of the sun, because it tends to shine into the camera – in this case my mobile telephone camera – and you do not really know what will arrive in the photo. However heedless of these problems, I continued and shot some photos, although only three were good enough. The others were somewhat blurred and the sun got lost somewhere. It was then that I saw it. Did you know that there is a planet sitting next to the sun? Of course not, because I discovered it today at 3.00 p.m. Note the time, as when it is entered into the archives it will be an important fact. This new planet did not only appear on one photo, but on all three. I chose this photo as it was hanging above the sun. On the other two photos it had even shifted its position, was probably going for an orbital journey.

I can see ithe headlines in the genuine press tomorrow (note – no fake news), “Angloswiss lady discovers new planet. Is it inhabitable? Will we be able to develop a colony on this planet?” Oh, the possibilities. It is now just a small point of light in the sky, but with a telescope we will  be able to see more detail. There might be oceans, mountains, even a primitive form of life.

There is an aura surrounding this new discovery. Perhaps it is a protective screen stopping intruders from other worlds.

Afternoon SunOn another photo you can definitely observe that the new planet “Angloswiss” is revolving around the sun and gaining on speed. I wonder what the reward is for the discovery of a new planet. I will be invited to lecture about my new discovery. how it happened. It was quite easy actually. I stood in the garden, held up my mobile telephone and although I could not actually see what I was doing, as I was blinded by the sunlight, I just pressed the button a few times. This new world is definitely round and quite large in comparison to earth. I wonder if our world can also be seen from this newly discovered planet. It must have always been there, but thanks to the precision work with my mobile telephone camera, the proof of its existence has now be found.

“What did you say? It could be a reflection in the glass of my phone from the sun?”

One thing I cannot stand is people that get jealous of the success of others. This is my new planet.

“You tell me it is the moon.”

We all know that the moon only exists at night. During the day it has other things to do, like visiting places on the other side of the world.

“What, the moon is always there, we cannot see it because of the light from the sun.”

Another jealous voice. This is my planet, I discovered it, I will become a centre of admiration from the people of the world. You do not have to become a scientist, to discover new worlds, even a simple housewife with a telephone camera can do it. Tonight I will take a photo of the moon, perhaps there is a second moon waiting to be discovered.

Daily Prompt: On the search for the centre

Good Morning

Crocus 26 (5)

The changing of the seasons is just wonderful. I have never felt it so much as this year, although this year is a little different to others. A lot has happened in my life over the last year, perhaps that is the reason. I left England 50 years ago for Switzerland leaving behind mum and dad. The world was getting smaller, plane journeys were more affordable, and so I still saw my parents at least once a year. They would visit Switzerland and I would go to London with my family. There was something I did not realise, that at the same time we were all growing older. The body was no longer as young and lively as it was. Mum was a worrier, but dad was managing.

Over the years mum passed away and dad was left on his own, and really alone, because I was in Switzerland. However, he had good friends and neighbours and managed OK. He was perhaps 80 years old when he made his last journey to Switzerland and I was surprised how much he had changed. I was meeting an elderly bent gentleman at the airport, and not the lively dad I knew from the days gone past. I would visit once a year, I could not manage more. I had a family and was a working lady.

Last year dad passed away, at the age of 100 and more. Dad was no longer there, and for me neither was London. I realised that I was no longer under an obligation to make the journey to London, which I must admit was becoming a burden. My health was not so good as I was also diagnosed with MS last year, although had the disease at least 30-40 years and it was always diagnosed as something else. For some years my walk was more similar to something for the Ministry of funny walks and people now and again passed a remark . So last year was a turning point in my life, but life goes on.

And now I have the first Spring of my life with no obligations, no have to’s, I can relax and enjoy – at the age of 70? That is the other side of the coin. We all look forward to retirement, to becoming an oldie with the golden as the adjective. I can now take walks in the wonderful Spring weather which are limited to half an hour as more is no longer feasible, although there are benches placed in strategic positions for a rest helping the half hour to be a little bit longer. I now take my cane everywhere outside the appartment for safety and support.

Catkins 26.02 (2)

I am lucky to live somewhere where nature is my neighbour. I noticed yesterday that the catkins on the hazel bushes are appearing already. Yes, I am enjoying the beginnings of Spring this year. I am now driving again, after almost 2 years. We are not getting younger, Mr. Swiss being ahead of me by a few years. We are not cut off from civilisation where I live: have a local train to the next town, and connections to other parts of Switzerland, but having a car to use makes a big difference for me.

And so today what are we two golden oldies doing? Another day dawns, the fridge is half empty (or half full) and a safari for new supplies will be embarked upon. Off to the supermarket (with me driving or not?) which is only 5-10 minuites driving time away: cook lunch and take a golden oldie sleep after lunch. It is funny with that after lunch sleep. I never did it earlier, regarded it as something really unnecessary. We sleep all night, so why during the day? Mr. Swiss was another opinion and did it all his life when possible. I tried it and discovered is had its positive side as it seemed to regenerate my body for further adventures in the afternoon and I no long fell asleep in the armchair whilst watching the TV in the evening. Part of the afternoon is reserved for “me” time on the computer.

I even enjoy housework today, because it gives me a good feeling after I have finished. I am not an ideal housewife, but I can see the positive side of things. I am not only cleaning or hoovering, I am completing another job to be able to move on to more interesting stuff. And of course the computer. Do not forget the computer, the occupational therapy for all golden oldies. I no longer think about buying new more fashionable clothes, I study the newest developments in the computer world. Windows 10 has arrived – the next windows is just around the corner. My mobile phone is iPhone 6, iPhone 7 has already arrived. Shall I or shall I not change my phone? And there is photography: just going for walks is OK, but taking photos is more OK and so I am always interested in new developments in cameras and lens. No more knitting here, my only finger action seems to be either peeling potatoes or on the keyboard to the computer.

The things that come to my head in the early hours of the morning, now 8.30 a.m. and time to move on. There are things to do, places to see and a life to make the most of, even if I do have to think about it for a few minutes before leaving my bed in the morning. Will I make it to the door or not – one of the exciting moments in the life of a golden oldie.

Enjoy the day, make the most of it, it will not be your last, but a day less in the life of a human.
