  1. Seeing your lovely asters reminded me that I need to add asters to the flower garden next year. My only asters this year are the wild ones in the woodland garden. Up in Maine where I first learned of them my friends called them Frost Flowers – they start out tiny and white in September, but gradually darken to an almost violet color as a killing frost approaches. Here in my section of New England they are pretty much the last thing that blooms.

    • I don’t have them in my garden, but here too they are the least plants of the year. We have some wild varieties on our forests. I remember them even in London where I grew up being sold on the flower markets
