RDP Sunday: Play

Today was a visit from son No. 2, his wife and of course the grandchildren. Before visiting the grandfather, Mr. Swiss, in his golden oldie home, they were at home with me and naturally their curiosity in the few toys I have at home. They know where they are and soon everything was distributed on the floor in the apartment. Although not exactly the toys in the photo, but the youngest, the granddaughter, soon found the furry animals whilst the grandson found a few games to play.

It was a pleasant change for me with a bit of life at home and now at the ages of four and six their tastes were changing and we even played a few card games, although I noticed grandson does not like to lose. I was back in the days with my dad, who was a great card plalyer, and taught me many games throughout my life. Such games that you can buy today did not exist in my childhood, but memories returned and who needs such toys when the brain enjoys its prompts.

Eventually they left for the way home and I was left to clear away the remains of the games, which I quite enjoyed doing. Tomorrow back to the routine. The grandson will be in his Kindergarten and the grandaughter goes to “Muki” which is gynastics with “mother and Kind (child)” and I will return to my boirng days of home life.

game boy

I suppose I was in my forties when the gaming bug got me, but blame No. 2 son, he knew them all. And then I had a birthday, and what did I get – a Game Boy: no more boring hours sitting around and wondering what to do, just insert one of those little cassettes and the music began to play. Was I dashing for boulders, or did I have  date with Super Mario, it made no difference. Or perhaps I was building walls with the Tetris bricks. I remember one game where armies were climbing the walls of a fort and I had to defend the fort. I still have my Game Boy in a cupboard, perhaps it still works, but it is better if I forget it. It might get me again and then we can forget the housework and cooking.

Of course I progressed to computer games, colouring landscapes with the Wizzball,  and travelling Koronys Rift, but to be quite honest, I never did understand that one. Something about visiting all 50 worlds and eventually arriving in the station where the flying saucers were, which should be destroyed. I do not think anyone ever got there without being shot down in the first landscape. To be quite honest I cannot remember all of them. In the meanwhile No. 2 son had become a pilot with his jet plane shooting down enemies. I was never really into that, but preferred  thought games instead of action.

Even adults play sometimes. Now my game is writing shopping lists on my mobile phone.

Ornament 25.07.2018

Let’s play a game, but which one should it be?
I used to play with dolls, my friend was a teddy bear
I dressed them and combed their hair and even gave them a wash
And then the games were finished, I had a new playground
It was called school, but my friends were real.  of flesh and blood
We would chase each other in the playground to see who could be caught
And the boys, did you ever play “kiss-chase”? But you did not catch them all
and sometimes you did not want to
School days were over and the earnest side of life began
It was still a game, but you were the prize
You had to find the right answers and solutions and you were paid for it
This was a great game, but only if you could solve the problems
It was no longer a “kiss-chase” but a rat race
There was also another game, more than just a kiss-chase
And if you won you could take the trophy home with you, or the trophy took you home
Play got a new meaning, it was no longer just a game
In your childhood days the washing, cooking and dressing was just a doll’s game
Now you were the doll and the fun became the earnest of life
You might even have your own living dolls, who were playing with their dolls
But you now had to dress your dolls and feed them and wash them, no longer a game to play, but reality
Your real dolls went to school, went to work, found their partner dolls
And you were now finished with playing games, you watched the others as they played
Perhaps one day you became the doll and were combed and washed and dressed
