…for tomorrow we die. The world is ending tomorrow! Tell us about your last dinner — the food, your dining companions, the setting, the conversation.
Photographers, artists, poets: show us DINNER.
“Looks like tomorrow’s the day.”
Woman was startled by the seriousness of Man’s voice.
“What day?”
“If you were not so busy wondering what to wear, you would have seen it in the newspaper and heard it on the news. The world is coming to an end. Something about a comet approaching and tomorrow morning it will hit the world, split it in two and we will all be a cloud of dust weaving around in outer space.
“Oh, Man, how disappointing and I did not buy anything for dinner. I was wondering why MacDonalds were giving away Big Macs with free coke. I thought it was an advertising gag, but I suppose tomorrow there won’t be any customers to buy it and it is such a shame to have all that good stuff perishing on the shelves. Would you like an extra portion of ketchup on your burger?”
“Woman we are talking about our last meal on earth and you are worried if I want more ketchup, but as you ask, I think I will.”
“But Man, if it is really the last day, then why not make the most of it and invite some friends.”
“Woman we do not have any friends and they are probably too busy organising their own last meal. This sort of thing does not happen every day.”
“No probably not, but I am not sure if I want to celebrate with a MacDonald hamburger. What about a Pizza. In the newspaper they write there is a special last day sale for pizza morte. You know your favourite with a nice hot pepper taste. They are offering two for the price of one and you do not even have to worry about the indigestion problems you have afterwards with that burning spice.”
“I don’t?”
“No, silly, you won’t be here to suffer.”
“Woman that is true, why worry, we could eat anything. Suddenly it is all free. Don’t forget to give the cat an extra portion of tuna fish before you fetch the food.
“Of course Man, how could we be so selfish and only think of our own little problems?”
So man and woman enjoyed their last meal on earth. As a desert they decided on a double portion of vanilla ice cream with strawberry sauce. He was allergic to strawberry and she was diabetic, but who cares, it was their last meal on earth.
The next morning they awoke to find the world was still there. Were they disappointed? Not really, they had no time to think about it. He was taken as an emergency case to hospital because overnight his body was covered with itching red spots (strawberry allergy). He also had digestive pains from the spices in the pizza and she had a diabetic shock through the intake of too much carbohydrate.
Ah yes, and there was no comet. Once again the scientists had made a mistake. What they mistook for a comet was a spot of dust on the lens of their super powerful electronic microscope which had been overseen by the cleaning lady. Actually it seems the worlds’ doctors and hospitals had a lot of emergencies to deal with on the day after the world should have come to an end.
The only happy beings on the earth were the cats. They were still sleeping after their extra portions of tuna fish.
