Our local town council makes it highly impossible to get information when you have a problem. At the moment I have a problem, perhaps for others not so much, but I am in the position currently of having to complete various documents for my handicapped son. He is not able, and slowly I have the feeling that I am also not able. The language used in high places, as now, is a differing vocabularly to the one I am accustomed to. They use other phrases and words and it is highly cofusing. They even put a remark that you should bring an interpreter with you if speaking another language. I can speak quite good German, even Swiss dialect, so that is not another language basically, but is it? Beurocratic places do seem to speak a different language. So I deided to phone the council offices, a telephone No. is supplied. However, I get a recording telling me that the offices are only available from 8.30 a.m. until 11.30 a.m. and I was calling in the afternoon. I wish I had had such a job when I was a working woman. Now I will have to patient. For such a quiet country town it seems like we are all New Yorkers and not Swiss peasants.
Bureaucratic language is something else. It seems designed so that we mere mortals can’t understand it. They should be obliged to make their forms readable in plain language.

I can only agree. Even many Swiss I know say the same and that is their mother tongue. My No. 2 son is a beaurocrat, working for the Swiss government but agrees with me.

Pat, it could be wahaaayyy worse. Have you ever tried to get ANYTHING at all done in France? That’s where you lose truly any will to live! But I agree, the bureaucratic gobbledegob is terrifying and the only goal it seems, is to confuse the citizen even more. I would really suggest you march in with a Notar. It will cost you but then – if you do anything wrong, even involuntarely – you pay a fine. Good luck my friend!

Seems to be an international illness.

Hence proved that bureaucracy thrives on a secret global language only bureaucrats are accustomed to, not the general public.

So true. Not a language you can learn in school unfortunately.
