RDP Wednesday: Whistle

The only whistlers here are the birds, mainly the sparrows. They seem to be influenced by the sun when it rises. I noticed this year that they often began at 4.30 in the early morning hours, although as the sun rose later, their whistling also began later. I managed to find a photo of a canary in my collection, that I probably took at the local bird aviary in town. The anaries are naturally the champions at whistling.

I can whistle, but more by luck than chance.

We were quite a military family, escept for Mr. Swiss. Due to medical problems he could not serve. However, here we have top left my youngest son. All Swiss able bodied men have to join the army and he did his duty every year for three weeks until he reached the age when he no longer had to serve. He also did the three month recruit school.

Then we have my dad who even got married in his uniform. He did not have a choice as he returned from the second world war and got married a day later and the uniform was all he had to wear.

Then we have my grandfather who served in the first world war in France. He was in the medical core, We had no heroes in the family, they served because they were not asked, they had to go.

RDP Tuesday: Identity

On 1st August it will be that time of the year again when Switzerland celebrates its national day. The flags have already been placed on the roads. Here you see on the left the national flag of our Kanton Solothurn, in the middle the national flag of Switzerland and on the right our silly cartoon similar flag of our village of Feldbrunnen, Everything will be closed on 1st August for a national holiday and we have a holiday. To be quite honest, I could not be bothered. I will be at home and as it is a Thursday, we will have our normal spaghetti dinner. In the evening No 1 son and I will eat what we happen to find in the fridge, so no problem.

I think there will be some sort of celebration in our village with wine and food in the evening, but I will not be there. At the moment we have temperatures of over 30°C and it just to hot to celebrate anything. I do not really identify myself with the Swiss history. There will be a few political speeches held and the radio will be playing national folks music all day probably. So Up with Helvetia (our latin name for Switzerland).

I had some rather sad news yesterday. It seems that last week the fox got into the rabbit-chicken enclosure at Mr. Swiss golden oldie home. The result was that only two chickens fom about ten, survived and two rabbits were dealt with by the fox. I suppose it is nature, kill or be killed. but many of the golden oldies are sad about this. I spoke to the guy who looks after them, but he said it has not yet been decied if and when they will be replaced. I was often there taking photos, especially when they were fed with the vegetable remains from the cooks.

RDP Monday: Sedentary

Me, about 16 years old, sitting on a stone overlooking the beach, probably the Isle of Wight in England, one of our favourite places to spend the annual family Summer holiday. I remember this holiday in particular, as I had just recovered from an illness, I think scarlet fever, and had lost quite a lot of weigh:t. However, the holiday helped for a speedy recovery. It was a time, about 1962, when such illnesses were not treated so seriously, and I managed to make a recovery. I had quite high fever but antibiotics were not such a subject at that time.

FOTD 28th July 2024: Savory

In German it is called translated “bean herb” because it is ideal to cook with beans apparently. I like it as a herb, and it is now flowering outside in my herb bed. This is the Winter variety, which is permanently in my garden. There is a summer variety, which is also good, but does not remain.
