Daily Writing Prompt: Family

Daily writing prompt
Describe a positive thing a family member has done for you.

I no longer have a family as such. A few relatives in England, but really few and no real contact. Just a phone call now and again. I remember when my father passed away I was really glad for the help I had from my cousin. He visited the hospital after my dad’s demise and organised details for me. I was in Switzerland at the time. A couple of weeks later was the funeral in London and all had been arranged. I had managed to contat the funeral directors, thanks to information from my cousin and everything went well.

This was almost ten years ago. Now I live alone with my son, Swiss relatives are not my family and my No. 2 son will help me where he can.

Otherwise I can now only hope that somewhere in the family ancestors there is a milionaire that will remember me in his testament, although I know of none. It actually happened to my husband when his far flung uncle died. In Switzerland a law tells you who gets the profits from a testament, and so it was with Mr. Swiss and his family – more luck than judgement. He had never had contact with this uncle.

  1. I’ve been thinking about this, too. One of my cousin’s daughters accused me last year of not caring about family. I don’t even know her and haven’t seen the cousin since 1999. So no, family doesn’t mean much to me. I’ve been on my own a long time.

  2. When growing up, all my mom’s sisters and brothers were close. This kept us cousins close. That foundation has lasted through 4 generations. Time does separate but we are striving to pass that closeness to our 5th generations which, in these sad times, is harder. Hugs to everyone.
