So I arrived home and went into the garden as I was itchin for a lichen. It was dark so I lit the torch. Luckily I had a small knife with me so did some scraping and I found that the lichin did not have any roots. It was just laying on the earth so no problem. Here is my lichin. It seems to have some stars amongst the growth.
