  1. They are similar to American black elderberry, as well as the blue elderberry that grows wild here. (According to some botanists, all three are the same species, although I consider the blue elderberry to be a separate species.) They should not be eaten while fresh, and do not taste very good anyway. However, they are safe to eat after cooking, and with sugar, make good jelly. You might find this to be amusing.
