I planted the seeds some time ago, and slowly the flowers are appearing. I have the climbing nasturtiums but up to now show no large inclination to climb.

Nasturtiums are still one of my favorites. They behave like perennials here. They replace themselves regularly. Those that grow through summer get shabby through winter, but only as a new batch grows to replace them. (Brent refers to them as ‘dago pansies’ because they are so stereotypically popular with ‘my people’.)

Here, too they’re rarely without blooms. Unfortunately, as much as I love them my wife does not like climbers.

They are not all climbers. Some are quite compact. I like the climbers because they hang over my raised beds.

Not all are climbers. Mine are ‘dwarf’, although they are not really dwarf; they just do not climb. They hang a few feet out of planter boxes though. The climbing sorts do not bloom as profusely, so are more foliar than floral.

I’ll keep the Dwarfs in mind perhaps we can get some from our local nursery.

Most are dwarfs, even if they are not labeled as such. Although there are many fancy varieties available, I prefer the common ‘Jewel Mix’. They initially contain a good variety of colors, and if allowed to reseed, revert to simply orange and yellow. They are easily obtainable online. I would not recommend planting seedlings, since a six pack of seedlings costs more than a packet of seed, and the seed are very reliable, and get established faster than seedlings.
