Trachycarpus fortunei, windmill palm is one of the more popular palms, and is remarkably tolerant of cold weather. I sent four seedlings to Virginia a few months ago. Another larger specimen lives out in the garden here. The tree in the pictures seems to be female.

Thanks for the explanation. They certainly withstand cold tmperatures growing in Switzerland. You see many of them growing in the Italian speaking area in the South outside with no problem and they also have some snow in Winter.

Yes, this species lives in the milder climates of Alaska. I noticed a few in Portland years ago. During my recent vacation, I noticed that they seem to have become a fad in the Pacific Northwest.
