Chronicles of an Anglo Swiss 
We used to grow magnolias on the farm, including some odd sorts. The most common magnolia here though is the evergreen Southern magnolia, which bloom sporadically throughout the year. The flowers are mostly obscured by the glossy evergreen foliage.

Oh yes, there are several cultivars (varieties). The most popular sorts are somewhat low and broad, to show off the flowers, although they can be pruned up above walkways and such. Taller sorts are less popular because the flowers are too high to appreciate as much. The Southern magnolia that is popular here is less variable. Except for a shrubby dwarf cultivar, Southern magnolia grows as a large evergreen shade tree, with foliage that is more appealing than the bloom.

I do miss ‘mine’ (no longer) so very much. They were one of the BESTEST features of my garden in France.
