They began quite neat and small in a pot from the store. The next year they were bigger and now they have firmly planted their feet in the flower beds. What can you call them? Platycodon is quite complicated, so they also have the name of Chinese Bell Flower or balloon flower. Do they explode when they open up with a bang? I have never heard them, but they seem to do it quite discrimately with no fuss . The first buds have apeared and I am waiting for the garden to be filled with explosions.

I have 10 of them all in a row

10!? Impressive. I have never grown just one. I see them as ‘potted plants’ in the supermarket, and sometimes I see them on desks in offices at work, but they get discarded after bloom, like poinsettias, chrysanthemums and such.

If you keep them and put them in the garden, they grow to twice the height and flower annually. A very pretty flower.

Oh yes, ‘I’ am aware of that, but no one else bothers with it. There are a few items in our gardens that originated in offices. People toss them into the pickup for me to dispose of, but they do not quite get that far.
