RDP Tuesday: Random

When a bee sees an insect hotel he has to make a decision. He will not just occupy any random hotel room, it has to be in the right place: a view from the balcony and enough room to curl up and wait for whatever happens to a bee in his hotel room. Some of the rooms were already occupied and the doors closed, but he managed to find a nice room almost a penthouse suite – so what could be better.

Good Morning

Later this morning, but it is cleaning lady day and I have a different routine and actually less time, but I am here. I already had excitement as my delivery from the store was not as I wanted. I ordered 1 kilo polenta, the rougher kind as I do not like the fine grains cooked. Not only did they send me the fine grained as they did not have the other sort, but only a 500 gramme packet and it was the Aha quality which is more expensive and for those with eating problems. I have already contacted the store and complained on their strange ideas of a substitute product. This afternoon I will be in town and will visit the store myself to see what they have.

After that bother I finished freshening up my windows and put away the goods I got from the store. I am already planning my next order. That is really not so easy often, as I have to know what I will be cooking at the week-end. Luckily my family is not so fussy and leave the choices up to me.

My birds are still giving me flight demonstrations, but at least I have some entertainment from my kitchen window.

You just have to love their antics in the air. I just wait for them to fly to the food supplies and catch them as they approach. They hover for a while in the air and then land.

We had a wonderful sunset yesterday evening and with that I will now leave you, Take care and have a good day.

FOTD 26th April 2021: Apple Blossom

Here are the flowers on the apple tree that I planted from a pip 30 years ago in a pot in on my office desk. Since then it has been living in my garden and this year has made a spectacular display of flowers for the first time. Up to now there were a few flowers, but this year the tree is covered with flowers. This is really getting quite exciting.

FOTD 26th April 2021: Apple Tree

Good Morning

Where is the sun? It’s there but hiding behind one of the trees, although we do have some clouds this morning. However, the good weather continues. Spring is certainly a wonderful time of the year after the cold grey days of Winter. The world has become green again, dotted with some colour from the spring flowers.

I seem to have tulips everywhere this year. The leaves in the picture are from my peonies which are preparing to show a few flowers eventually. We call them translated from the German name Whitsun roses, so hopefully at whitsun they will show their flowers. Whitsun is at the end of May, so they still have plenty of time to develop.

I spent my time with the birds and bees outside on the porch yesterday afternoon. The few food choices outside were quite popular and the birds are even learning to share, especially the finch and tits, quite a colourful group. The sparrows are less friendly and usually prefer to eat alone. They share with no-one I noticed.

This little one decided to pose for a portrait.

Otherwise not such a busy day for me, but I like to relax. I was busy with my Kindle yesterday, engrossed in one of those weird books about mummies, vampires and demons, the last in a book series I like to read, the main figure being the daughter of Van Helsing, the man behind the demise of Dracula. She deals with ailments among the undead and other strange figures. They also have their medical problems. Mr. Swiss asked me what I am reading and did I notice he shook his head a little when I told him. He prefers more reality. I suppose everyone to their own taste.

There was not very much on the TV yesterday for entertainment with the film Shrek 2, the sequel to Shrek 1 which I had seen. Shrek 2 was not so exciting, more a children’s film and of course it had a happy ending. Today another day at home which suits me. I am planning (already) my next order for online delivery. The new special offers arrive on Tuesday for ordering and you get the preview today on Monday. I am becoming quite an expert in this field of knowledge. Todays meat was thawing nicely overnight in the fridge.

And now to get an early start to the day. I am planning on baking a bread today, although have plenty of time for that operation. I also want to tidy my food cupboard and kitchen freezer. I have a few unwanted items which have collected over the past few months which I will probably never use and it will only get older with the time.

Keep safe everyone and I hope the week begins well for all.

FOTD 25th April 2021; Apple blossom

When I saw this apple blossom on this particular tree, I was so happy, thrilled in fact. It is my second apple tree and this time I planted it from an apple pip. I would have an apple in the office in the morning for my break and I had a potted plant on my desk, so I decided to put a couple of the pips in the pot. After a couple of weeks I already had a baby apple growing. It was quite tiny and weak, but as time passed it got bigger and stronger and so I took it home and planted a couple in my garden. One survived and now we have an apple tree of the Idared variety in the garden 20 years later. Idared is something we usually buy as an imported apple and not one that grows here.

My apple tree began to grow in my garden, but it was at least five years until I saw the first apple blossom which even produced 3-5 apples. Unfortunately the apples were not really strong enough to survive and also not so good. It was an experiment and so I left the tree to do its own thing. We are now many years later. In beetween I got a few weak apples but nothing special and now, this year, my apple tree has decided it is old enough and big enough to keep up with the others. I have so many blossoms on the tree this year as I have never had. from the top to the bottom. Will I now be one of the only producers of Idared apples in Switzerland? Will they survive and will we be able to eat them? This is quite an exciting event for me and my garden.

Good Morning

Another wonderful sunrise. I even ventured out into the garden, turned on the water and sprayed my garden. It is now time to compensate the failure of rain during the warmer weather. Due to concentrating on the garden I forgot to heat up the oven to bake up my Sunday platt bread which I buy half baked from the store.

However, whilst I was writing this morning piece I managed to catch up and am now eating my slices of freshly baked warm bread with some butter and jam – a good start to the food of the day. I also forgot to make my tea but now have a steaming hot cup waiting for me, so the day is saved. I must be getting old forgetting so much.

And I was again in town yesterday. It now looks almost like the pre-covid days when we would make the most of the good warm sunny weather and enjoy a drink outside. We seem to have got used to the idea of seeing masked people, although not so much when having a drink and something to eat. I must admit I never wear my mask outside unless I go into a closed space. Although I am now completely vaccinated you still have to be careful. Seeing carefree scenes like this reminds me of the good old days when we could move freely.

Even our many fountains in town, this one on the market place, attracted the crowds and kids for their water games. It was again a typical Saturday afternoon. If this continues, we might even have a few street musicians again. We are so lucky in our country to have such possibilities.

I also saw this wonderful display of potted plants on the steps of a town house.

I called in at the store to get a few items: mainly a weeks supply of cigarettes for Mr. Swiss and some special chocolates he likes. I also picked up a pot of basil for the outside garden. It was the second I bought. One I planted in my herb bed but this one will stay in the pot. You can never have too much and I like basil for flavouring my tomato salads and some Italian dishes.

After the evening meal it was a time of relaxation with a book, even the TV, although there was nothing really interesting on the box. I must have been a little tired from the outside weather and escaping to the great outdoors as I fell asleep in the chair already by 9.00 pm in front of the TV. However, no problem. Being a golden oldie I can please myself what I do. Needless to say I had an early night, following soon on the bedroom trail left by Mr. Swiss.

Today there will be no adventures and I will stay at home and enjoy the stressless life of a golden oldie. Sundays still have their advantages, even if they are not very much different to the other days. I wish you all a good Sunday with no stress. Take it easy. Isolation is not really so bad I find. I enjoy escaping from the maddening crowds now and again.
