Good Morning

I really have nothing to show for a spectacular sunrise, because it just refuses to rise in the morning. As I was scootering my way to the local store yesterday afternoon at 3.00 in the afternoon I saw the sun battling against the clouds for the first time since at least four days. It did not stay long, but proved that it was still there.

Today my cleaning lady is here and is busy with my bathrooms and kitchen. I am go glad to have her. At first I was apprehensive, but Mr. Swiss insisted and now after a couple of years I am so glad that she comes. She is only here for 2-3 hours, but that is fine with me. The normal cleaning procedures I can still do with the hoover and I often see Mr. Swiss taking a walk with the duster, every little helps. But my cleaning angel gets down to it with the cloth and various magical liquids that remove the lime deposits in the bathroom and shower. She will be coming until the week before Christmas. She has no big family in Switzerland, being from South America, so will not be having family Christmas celebrations and neither will we.

Sometimes I get the feeling I am being watched when I look out the window and see the sparrows perched in the opposite trees.

And then I noticed someone else that was watching the birds hiding behind a wall.

Suddenly she springs forwards, but the sparrows are quicker and fly off to the next tree.

It seems that Mr. Covid is now taking a grip on our Kanton. We are not so infected in our little village, just one or two cases, but a couple of the larger towns (Olten and Grenchen) are having problems with their senior residences. In one of the homes 50% of the patients are infected with the virus. Will this scourge never end?

At least the weather was acting normally yesterday. It was cold, but not freezing and the snow has stayed away from our area. The inhabitants of our Italian Kanton of Ticino and in the mountaineous Kanton of Grisons are having a hard time of it coping with the snow. One village was cut off from civilisation for a few days.

I am off into town this afternoon which will be the first time since last week. I hope to get some meat to freeze for over Christmas. Luckily I have a second fridge in the appartment that I reserve for my MS injection material, but there is enough space to take more. I am working stereo and at the same time planning my shopping for online delivery on Friday. I sometimes wonder how we managed without computers and iPhones, but we always did.

And now I should continue with cooking for lunch. The meat has been in the pan for some time, I just have some Spätzle to cook. All I have to do is fry it, I buy it already cooked, although I am also thinking about making it myself. One of the cookery organisations are offering a good machine to mix the flour and milk and eggs to do it.

Wishing a good day today with no problems, although easier said than done. One bright spot yesterday was that the cloud cover was lifting from our Jura mountains, although this morning it had returned again.

  1. Do you have vaccines in the pipeline there? Apparently our first was injected yesterday. I’m not holding my breath for mine, though. Never in my life have I been treated with any sort of haste, so why would it start now?

    • As far as I know England is the only country doing it at the moment. I hope it will work, but all beginnings can have their problems. My cleaning lady did not come last week as she had a cold. Today she was here again, but said she decided to have a corona test because of the cold. She was luckily negative and she even had the test paid for by the sickness insurance because of her work where she often cleans for golden olides like myself. She said otherwise it would have cost almost 200 Swiss francs to be paid for by yourself.

  2. Good afternoon, another sunny day with below freezing nights. Clouds can added to a picture. Your birds are what we call house sparrows. In the 50s’ we called them English sparrows. The first brought into the country as they feed on insects. I have had my shower and good breakfast. Was your trip into town successful? Stay safe!

    • It was a very dull and miserable, no sun, just low cloud. I went into town, but was glad to be home again. It was just not pleasant weather. In the part of London where I come from sparrows were our national bird.It seems with the years their numbers have dwindled We have mainly sparrows in our garden, but also some tits. There are not many insects at the moment due to the colder weather.

  3. It hasn’t snowed again here — yet — but it is cold and the deck is all ice. You can’t even dig it up because it’s hard. It is VERY slippery. Regardless, I had to add seeds to the hanging feeder. The other two are half full, so they will go another couple of days. There is more snow expected soon, though. It’s winter, so even a warm spell now isn’t really warm. Just not as cold.

COVID has a stranglehold on the U.S. There is almost no place — except Hawaii — that’s considered “safe” and probably Hawaii is safe because it’s a string of island, so it’s easy to close it off from tourists. Of course, tourists are the bread and butter of Hawaii. It’s all vacation all year round, so financially they must be really hurting. Plus, they don’t grow crops (except pineapple), so they have to import all their food from the mainland. Free from COVID, but i suspect everyone who isn’t already rich is out of work.

So far, so good here. They have given the Pfizer vaccine the go-ahead, but when we’ll get it? No idea. We aren’t medical workers and we aren’t in a senior facility, but we are considered very vulnerable and Owen works outside the house which makes HIM vulnerable, too. Spring maybe? It’s going to be months, but at least Trump will be gone by then (!) and maybe our world will run better.

    Stay healthy!

    • I saw that the whole COVID problem has got out of hand in the states, many thanks to Trump. We are also having big problems here. Numbers are claiming constantly no matter what we try. All bars are now closed in our Kanton and restaurants from 9.15 in the evening. There are no trains running between Italy and Switzerland. I have a feeling they are just trying things out.
Our snow has gone for now, but Friday will be a wet day probably. I am just fed up with the cloud cover and would love to see some sun again
