Good Morning

We got another one of those wonderful sunrises this morning and in the distance you can even see the beginning of the mountains in the Bernese Overland. I take these photos with zoom from my front garden although this morning I had to be careful. Walking across a few ice patches in my house shoes is not exactly ideal, but what we do for a photo knows no bounds. Some climb mountains and I just walk across the garden. There are now only a few patches of snow and ice left from yesterday. During the day it thaws, but with night temperatures of below freezing it remains.

The cold weather does not seem to deter my birds and even my robin decided to perch on a tree for a better view of everything.

And here he is again keeping a safe distance from the other birds. This was really a lucky shot and it was only when I uploaded it that I realised my robin was with the other birds. He usually avoids other company especially when eating.

There was just a little too much snow around yesterday to venture out, so I stayed at home, sending No. 1 son to get my bread. I do have frozen bread which is OK when you do not have any, but if there is a possibility to buy it freshly baked then we do prefer it and No. 1 son likes an excuse to go into town. I have now got myself covered for food for the next complete week. Based on Winter experience gathered over my years I remember going back to work after the New Year. We were always greeted with thick layers of snow and almost impassable roads as having to be in the office already at 7.30 in the morning meant that the road clearing machines had not yet completed their work. This was the reason I decided to place a nice online order to ensure I did not have to go places outside and do things next week. If the weather would be OK for mobility, I would do a little shopping, but now it will not be necessary. I am in the lucky position of have a deep freezer chest in the cellar, a normal sized freezer in my kitchen and even two refrigerators. I have a fridge in the kitchen and also one in my so-called office to store my MS medicine, so what could be better. I usually order three months supply of my injection material, but as it empties over the month, there is always room for more.

I surprise myself with my new way of golden oldie life. At the beginning I had to get used to my new routine, but now there is no problem. I even now have a good friend with one of the guys that delivers from the supermarket, although they have three chauffeur and all nice blokes. Having the groceries delivered does not cost more than usual as I do not have to pay a delivery charge. Mr. Swiss is amazed when he discovers that he has a necessity. I tell him no problem, and disappear to my laundry/store room and replace it for him. I discovered that once I had the standard basis for what I need, it is only a questions of replenishing the supply now and again. I have a new hobby.

And now to move on with my other hobby, housework. Even that has its interesting aspects, especially when you suddenly find something that was missing. Mr. Swiss could not find his mobile photo this morning. I found it next to mine on the table. Today will be another isolated day and I really must get around to baking the cake I wanted to bake since three days. Have a good day, and a happy New Year to all wherever you are. We are all hoping that it will be a better one that this one was.

Good Morning

And another snowy morning. Some time in the night I woke for a visit to a certain place, where most of us golden oldies go and took a look out of the window and yes, it was snowing: large flakes were falling and this here is the result. Actually it is not so bad as we have 1°C meaning that it is already thawing a little. I am not sure if it will thaw to have a chance to go shopping this afternoon. Today I have a delivery from my store which will take me through until Monday apart from what I already have in the freezer.

Yesterday afternoon I was lucky as our snow had almost completely melted and I could get to the local store (it is just along the main road in the distance on the left – a 5-10 minute trip on my scooter. I had two bags full when finished but I met a married couple in the store, also getting their supplies who are my neighbours, just a door away. In the meanwhile whilst I was in the store it had began to rain. My neighbour was there with his car and offered to take my shopping in his car which was great. I then only had to drive off home afterwards and I met them both again in our underground garage where they were unpacking all the shopping. I was so glad for their help and now all I had to do was to transport my shopping up to the apartment. Eventually we all helped each other with opening doors. We have been living side by side for more than 20 years and we had a discussion about coping in the bad weather. Like me, she also has a deep freezer in the cellar with accompanying machine to vacuum the goods to freeze. Yes, life gets a little different when you are a golden oldie, they are both golden oldies as we are.

It looks like next week will be a cold and snowy one so yesterday I began to plan next weeks survival rations. Practice makes perfect and thanks to my store in the cellar I should be decked for all I need. I am still working on it and will programme the delivery for next Monday.

I was not intending to write anything this morning as I am a little later, so I am now off. Have a good day, keep safe and all that jazz.

Mr. Robin paid us a visit yesterday.

Mr. Magpie was also here and managed to find a peanut.

FOWC with Fandango: Ridiculous

“This is ridiculous, since we arrived at the human supermarket we get tied up and she disappears.”

“Quite right, but I can smell her, she is not far away.”

“Of course not, she is sitting in the restaurant drinking her coffee, ignoring us and talking to someone.”

“I know, and the someone she is talking to is the owner of our friend Fido tied up over there.”

“At least he is barking for attention. That gives me an idea, let’s bark as well.”

“Forget it, all of us are barking for attention and we are just being ignored.”

“I have an idea. You remember that vampire film on the human TV where the wolves were howling.”

“Yes, sounded quite good.”

“I am sure we can do that as well, but just a moment. Fido, listen, can you how like a wolf?”

“Of course, no problem.”

“Then let’s all do it together.”

The result was an empty restaurant when the ladies had to collect their dogs after the other customers complained about the noise.

RDP Tuesday: What Next?

In October we had the Christmas season although it was not yet December
We were hanging up decorations already in November
Christmas Carols were being sung, on the radio they were everywhere
And now Christmas has been and gone but did we really care?
Now we are ready for the next wave
So what about a New Year rave
Only a few days, the stores clearing the shelves
Already making room for our carnival elves
Carnival is end of February, it cannot come soon enough
After Christmas Pudding we eat pancakes dressed up in carnival stuff
And all through these seasons there is a very red thread
It is called a pandemic, unfortunately rhyming with dead
So let us make a week of days with Christmas, New Year and Easters
Fitting in a pancake day, for constant enjoyment of feasters
Life is short, make the most of it all
Business, profits must continue, enjoy and have a ball

RDP Tuesday: What Nest?

Good Morning

Another wonderful sunrise this morning and what is even better, it is warmer and I could only hear the sound of melting snow. It is now disappearing and when everything goes well I will be out and about again today. I even noticed a little rain is expected so what could be better to clear it all away. I had a real taste of Winter yesterday and what could be. I was really housebound, no chance of going anywhere either by scooter or local train, but luckily I have No. 1 son who gladly went to the local store. He even went into town for the groceries in the larger supermarket and called in at the chemist as my Vitamin D drops were at an end. He might be autistic, but when he has a purpose he fulfils it no matter what and I can really rely on him. I have also learned something from the Winter problems. I am now covered this week for what I need more or less and today I can get what is necessary in the store. I will be having an online delivery on Wednesday and will be making a new online order today to be delivered next week on Monday just to be sure that I am covered for next week in case of another attack by snow.

At least being homebound keeps me away from Mr. Covid. I noticed that cases are a little less (only a little) in our country, probably due to an isolated life over Christmas. We are still having our Swiss problems, but our village has been free from any new cases, and we have a population of 950 approximately.

I have had a new visitor in the garden over the past couple of days. Yesterday I took the chance to capture a few photos. He was nicely sitting in the tree opposite. The result was 60 photos. It is now clearly one of our jays. Last year I remember having a pair that were visiting and either they have returned, or it is the next genration. I have no idea where they nest, but probably in the nearby forest.

At least life gets interesting with my birds.

I also had a visit from a blue tit, which I believe are called chickadees in the States. I am becoming an amateur ornithologist slowly, but it is the only variety I have at the moment.

I was again left with the TV when Mr. Swiss retired to bed yesterday evening, but was a little disappointed. After watching our favourite soap, East Enders, there was really nothing very interesting to watch and I am fed up with the eternal silly, stupid quiz programmes with people exposing themselves as idiots. I do not mind general knowledge which I can also have a try at the answers like Mastermind, University Challenge or even Pointless, but some programmes are really an insult to your intelligence.

As I did not go anywhere yesterday to get something for lunch I am left with a deep freeze choice.I have a pack of prawns of which I only need half and a mixture of various fresh veg in the fridge, so I decided on an Angloswiss creation of a pan fry accompanied by some pasta and I should really use the vegetable before it becomes unusable.

And now to carry on with daily life. By the way I was writing this piece, as I usually do, to the accompaniment of my current favourite Global British radio station Classic FM on my iPad or iPhone. They really have a wonderful selection of classical music, almost a hit parade of the best. I like almost all types of music, but sometimes you need something smooth and reassuring, so give me Beethoven, Mozart and Bach any time, combined with some Chopin and Prokofiev: with some opera mixed in it is the perfect mixture.

So have a good day everyone and make the most of it. I was really down yesterday due to the weather, but today everything looks different and the solutions have presented themselves, even if our local mountain is slowly being iced by snow.
