I think that is what they are called in english. I have one in my garden (not this one) and it is one of the first to flower at the end of Winter.

We just know them as hellebores. I used to grow them. People payed a lot of money for the cultivars, but they were no better than the seedlings that we also sold much more cheaply. I did not enjoy growing them, and I enjoy them even less in the landscapes here. They are popular because they perform ‘reasonably’ well in the shade of redwoods. However, they do not do well enough for me. They would probably perform better if I cleaned away their old foliage that disease overwinters in.

It is a bit of a tradition here around Christmas, the first to flower in winter. I have one in the garden and it flowers every year. The stores are full ot them to sell at the moment.

Although they are not a tradition here, there are many people here from other places where they are traditional. I suspect that is why we needed to grow them.
