The sunflowers are hanging their heads Do they know their days are ending Do they know their seeds are spent Do they hear the harvester coming nearer But their stalks are not yet bent They will stand until the last day The yellow petals already withered Their purpose has now been served Their oil will be delivered
The goldfinches have cleared all the seeds from the sunflowers in my garden. I had so many that I doubted that the birds could eat them all so soon. Maybe they know something about winter I don’t.

We plant fields of sunflowers here for the oil that we use for cooking.
