I was interested reading Mr. Bump’s article in connection with online shopping, as my name was mentioned.

Yes I am an online shopper, but I realise that we women are all in it for different reasons. I had to re-think my situation when I discovered that I was one day carless. I had returned my driving licence and no longer wanted to drive. At the age of almost 74 it was time. I was no longer feeling so secure behind the driving wheel. Mr. Swiss no longer had his driving licence since a couple of years. The only reason I bought my car was because we were otherwise carless. Mr. Swiss was becoming invalided and so was I. My MS would not improve as the years go past and I was now relying on my electric wheelchair, although I now have a scooter with an attachment for my walker, which makes it a lot easier for shopping.

Shopping became the problem. The corona virus added to situation as the the delivery slots with the online shops were fully booked. Now things have improved. In the meanwhile I decided that I should get a good deep freezer chest for storing meat and other items. I also bought a vacuuming machine for freezing the meat I had bought at the store. I often cooked double portions, especially meat for the spaghetti and now I often freeze meat balls to cook in a sauce etc. etc.

Shopping without a car was no longer the same situation and I had to re-think it all. I like to buy my meat fresh from the butcher at the store, as also vegetables, so this did not come into question so much for online, which I decided to do once a month.

It was now a case of having enough groceries at home to lighten the burden of shopping. Once a month I order a month’s supply of basic food – see photo. We all have our own choices of what we like to have in our kitchen. When Mr. Swiss now has a craving for a certain pasta, when I want to cook with tinned tomatoes or other tinned food, I have it in my laundry room which is the best place to store it all. Perhaps we want a tuna fish salad, no problem. I have at least 6 tins in storage.

And toilet paper, there is always enough when you order 2 pakets of 30 rolls each once a month. I have bottles of oiive oil, wine vineagar for the salad sauce and four litre packs of milk monthly are enough for our needs. There are boxes of tea bags, even tooth paste and soap, not to mention the cleaning fluids I need. I have two cola addicts in the family, No. 1 son and Mr. Swiss, so a monthly order of 4×6 1,5 liter bottles is made, and I like my fizzy mineral water, so 2×1,5 liters are also on the list. They are all stored on the floor in the laundry room under the table.

I do not take an imaginary walk in the supermarket, it is a question of making life more comfortable when you are no longer as mobile as you were. I enjoy visiting the store, meeting people and going through town on my scooter, perhaps taking a photo here and there (one of my hobbies). When I prepare my monthly list for the online shop of course I ask Mr. Swiss if he needs something, but I have discovered that he does not have the routine. He has the habit of telling me a day later when the list and order has been made. Howeveer, after 51 years of marriage, I know what he wants before he does.

This is by no means a criticism on the way others online shop, but my particular situation is a little different to most. I still do my weekly shopping, but with much less stress.

My next problem might be Winter, because it could be in our Swiss Winters, that I might be snowbound, but then I can also take the local road train to the next store, which is only two short stops. Or I might then order online more than just once a month. I even have a few Angus beef hamburgers frozen in my stock.

Odd is now becoming a way of life.

RDP Thursday: Bask

Go for a walk with the dog to the river.

Give him a nice bright coloured ball.

Throw it into the river.

You will have one happy dog

Basking in the delight of being in the water.

Not once, or twice, but at least ten times.

In and out fetching the ball.

His name is Mo and belongs to my boss that I had when I was working.

I met them at the river this afternoon.

Good Morning

I would say another sunny day. However, after the surprise yesterday afternoon whenI left the store to find my scooter with its wet seat, I am not so sure. The mornings can be deceiving. Wben I embarked on my journey to the store yesterday afternoon I could feel that there was rain in the air.It was not in the weather forecast, but that has often been proved wrong. I met the guy outside the store that was arriving to pick up my shopping to bring it home for me. He has a large container fixed to his bike for the shopping but he said it looked like it could become a wet journey, although the sun had began to peek through.

On my way home through the town it was still damp, but the rain slowly gave up, although driving a scooter when it rains is not quite so good. There is no possibility to carry an umbrella and there is no cover. I do have a large rain cape which was given to me when I got the scooter, but I have never worn it. When I got home, Mr. Swiss says he always takes it with him and covers the scooter when it rains when he has to go inside a store. I decided a good idea, and you do not get a wet seat afterwards.

These musicians managed to find there shelter in the doorway to one of our large churches in town and he gave me a friendly wave as I took the photo. He came over for a few words afterwards. I think it was a local person, just having some fun with his friends playing their instruments and perhaps collecting some money for a student holiday somewhere.

I often listen to British radio during the morning and it is full of advertisements for flying to other countries for a holiday, which I do not really understand. Who really wants to go somewhere when you are confronted with two weeks isolation when you return home. One holiday country after the other is being added to the list of places not to go. Even Switzerland is now included. Our Corona virus is also going up and down constantly and every day there are more then 100 new cases.

When I reached my estate it was still looking quite gloomy although there was a promise of sun and it had at last stopped raining. After arriving I had a few things to deposit in my freezer down in the cellar. When I got back to the apartment the delivery man arrived with the large order I had made online and it was a lot. I was on my own with Mr. Swiss, so I spent the next half hour organising it all in the laundry room where I keep it all. There were eight packs of mineral water and pepsi cola, but I waited for my son to arrive to do the heavy work. Just as I was finishing he arrived so we dealt with the rest together. Now we are fixed up for the next month.

And now I should be moving on. Today is the day of fresh bed linen. I already began with my duvet and cushion cover and removed the linen from the bed, but have to continue with the rest. Otherwise I am hoping for a quiet afternoon, perhaps a short journey in the area. There is not rain prophesied for today, but I am leaning not to trust the forecast. My trousers are now dry from yesterday’s escapade.

So let us do the rest. I should finish the beds, in between have a shower and eventually do a walk with the hoover and mop through the home. I hope your day will be a good one. Do not forget your raincoats if it looks like rain, and remember to take your masks. Today is our first day of mask wearing by law in the stores and shopping areas. I bought another box yesterday for my son as he now has to do the right thing as well.
