Good Morning

No sun up to now, but at least there is no rain. I had a nice beginning to the week and just had an online call from my daughter-in-law on the other side of Switzerland. Life is so interesting with these online messenger contacts and I could see my granddaughter in action on the screen eating her breakfast and it was a good start to the week.

I was also surprised to see my mega hostas had already begun to flower in the garden. They are surviving quite well despite the rain showers and the slugs have not yet begun their attacks on the leaves. I have also regularly spread my anti slug pellets in between which has probably kept them in the retreat, if they survived. I am kind to all insects, with the exception of flies and slugs. There I help to maintain the balance of nature by destroying them when I can.

Talking of insects I spotted this one yesterday sitting on a leaf. It resembles a ladybird, although the wrong colours. I have no idea what it is. The shell seems to be a little squashed on one side, but it is alive although it also seems to have trapped one of its wings in the shell.

Otherwise today is a day of shopping, although just along the road to the supermarket and not into town. I do not have a lot to get, but there is always something I need. Mr. Swiss needs some supplies from the chemist, so I will call them and they bring it in the afternoon.

I am debating whether or not to buy a vacuum welding machine for freezing items. I have one that operates by battery. It does the job OK, but not always so reliable. Most of the food I buy for freezing I can have vacuum packed in the store, but there are some items I like to pack myself at home, especially cold cut left overs. I seem to be redesigning my daily life since being without a car.

At last life is returning to almost normal. The corona virus is only two new cases in Switzerland according to the newest statistics and our numerous religious holidays are now almost gone. There is one left in August, on a Saturday when the shops will be closed, but I have time to plan around that one.

Otherwise I should now move on with this, that and the other. Have a good day everyone and make the most of the week ahead.

  1. Good Morning. I believe that the beetle is simply known as ‘black ladybird’. There is a North American species that is known weirdly as ‘twice stabbed ladybird’, probably because it has only two red spots. (It is a really weird name nonetheless.) I have never seen one because it does not live here.

  2. Although it has been quite dry, our flowers are blooming like crazy now, but the pollen is so high that between Garry’s glaucoma and my asthma, staying in seems to the better plan for both of us. If we get some rain, it will help clean the air!
