RDP Saturday: Better

Better? No, nothing is better. It is the same. Perhaps where you live there are less cases of this coronus problem, but it is still there lurking in the background. I just had a very strong talk with my handicapped son (autism) who said “bye” and went on his usual walk through the town in the afternoon: a town that is now, or should be, empty of people. Perhaps there are a few ignorants wanting to enjoy the nice weather outside, but an autist does not realise that we are on other times. I certainly would not be keen for him to get ill, or even worse, bring the whole thing home. I cannot lock him in, but explained if he really wants to go for a walk, then he can do his walking locally in the woods or even the village (which is very small), but certainly not in town.  Thank goodness he has a mobile phone and I called him to say come home immediately. I was having my midday sleep when he left and did not realise it quick enough.

It has also not got better in the stores. To a certain extent yes, that we again have toilet rolls, but I decided to prepare something today where I need a large pack of flaky pastry, a double packing. All I found was one remaining single pack on the shelf. The panic crowds had struck again and it was all sold out. There was another lady next to me searching for the same.

I eventually bought a double pack of normal pie crust pastry and decided that if I did the bottom layer of the pie crust pastry I could do the top layer with the flaky pastry. I was again reminded of the second world war when my mum said they even made coffee out of chicory and eggs were in a powder form.

So nothing has got better and it will be a long time until it does. Let us not have any illusions that because the cases of this illness might be a little less and the curve is flattening (whatever that may be) we are a long way from normalisation of talking to each other without having to shout across the garden fence. And now to make my mincemeat pie, with one roll of flaky and one roll of pie pastry. Thanks you panic buyers, you are cutting in your own flesh. May you have no toilet rolls left and have to use newspaper.

  1. Agreed on that last sentence Pat! Flippin’ hoarders!

I agree also that this is not going to be over any time soon.

    Hope your son is ok.

  2. My friend with the developmentally disabled son has some similar challenges though her son cannot go out alone except in the neighborhood where everyone knows him anyway. But now he can’t do that. He’s an exuberant people-person, affectionate with those he knows. He relates to the world physically. He also can’t go visit his brother and sister-in-law, they don’t family nights and he doesn’t get to go to his enrichment programs every day. I think he’s finally understood, but I can imagine that for him — without the usual ability to reason or read — it’s got to be weird and even scary.

  3. My son is quite independent and has often travelled by train on his own over the border to nearer parts of Germany, but that is in normal times. Now we have abnormal times and he must learn that the world is no longer the familiar place he knows

  4. So glad you were able to direct your son back home. We have been working in our yard. I didn’t have time while I was working at my job, so now that I retired, I have the time, but the desire is lacking. It is looking better, though. I can hear my neighbors outside, also, so a little ‘hello’ over the yards is a good thing. We are all as safe as we can be. And Trump doesn’t need to wear a face mask, so what can you do……

    • Masks are quite scarce here and younrarely see them they are important, but apparently more for others than yourself and I think yiunwould have to wear a fresh one daily. I have a gardener for the basics, but since Coronas I haven’t bothered to contact him

  5. It’s the same here. Sometimes, you can get stuff if you show up right after they have filled the shelves, but often, there’s nothing. And there is nothing we can do about it except wait. At least you have something like a sane government.

  6. I also wanted to buy pastry, and it was out in the 3 stores gathered together…. funny that! Didn’t have any idea why.
We are still going for walks. It’s not forbidden here and we are keeping our distance to all others who are also out. We HAVE to move or we go crazy. Yesterday, there was much ‘traffic’ on the lanes, everybody was very well behaved, we were shouting good days at the required 2m distance…. but of course I very well understand your plea with regards to your son. Isn’t being autistic rather a good thing in this case? Isn’t he holding his distance anyway? I would really like to know – I am friends with a number of autists and we often used to ‘shout’ at each other in all friendliness across a distance of roughly 2m….

    • I think everyone wants to bake at the momennt. I could go for a wheelie in my chair, but I cannot be bothered. Although autists are not so social, if they meet up with a oolleague they csn get nearer and at the moment he is not really meeting anyone as they are all staying at home.

  7. it is pretty bad over here in the U.S. as well..barren store shelves, and panicking hoarders. Everyday a new “order” is issued by our governing body it seems.Everything is surreal..

    • It happened here at the beginning when people mistook pandemie for famine. There are stilll a few items missing from the shelves due to the panickers, but things are normalising slowly. Our govermment gave out a few instructions at the beginning, but being a smaller country, things are now well under control and I see we are getting less cases of the virus although still have a long way to go.

      • i just hope it starts going away here. I am to the point that i really wish i didn’t live in this mess of a country. We never get honest information , but instead everyone trying to scare us or bully us through the media. I am glad it is getting better for you guys…i suppose i will live thru all of you via osmosis on here…lol

    • That is so true although at the moment I am going through a very lazy phase and have no energy to do anything. I still have a couple of pieces of pie left in the fridge, for this evening.
