Poppies just like that, but a little more red and a little less orange — probably because of the soil in which they are growing — grew all over the hills of the Galilee in May and June. It was beautiful to see!

It is so different from our native poppy, the state flower of California, which still grows wild in some regions. Yours looks more like what we know as an Iceland poppy, and is likely related. It is amusing to think that it grows wild somewhere. Every species of plant is native ‘somewhere’.
