My Mother always wanted grow peonies as they bloom by Memorial Day and she had flowers for the family graves.

This is one I could never figure out. Some of the neighbors grow them very well. I can not. The winters do not get very cold here. Peonies only do well in the coldest spots. Yet, they happen to do well in spots that do not see to be any colder than my garden.

We call them Whitsun roses in german translated, because they are programmed to flower at whitsun according to how the weather is. They do very well here, but we get very cold winters usually.

Many flowers are scheduled for particular holidays, but I would not have guessed that peonies would be scheduled for anything. But then, I have never grown them.
