I think this is the first and only time I have ever been able to take the photo of a strelitzia. It is definitely not a member of the Swiss flower scene, and it is very rarely that I see them in the flower stores.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain!

They are big tough perennials. They are not easy to work with when the get big. If they get too crowded to bloom well, the only remedy is to cut them back, dig them up, divide them and then put a few smaller pieces back (and maybe share the rest with neighbors). It takes the newly divided plants a few years to bloom again. Consequently, no one wants to dig up big crowded clumps, even if they do not bloom much anymore. Fortunately, it takes many years for them to get that crowded! There is a giant strelitzia too. It grows up on big stalks, and provides exquisite rich green foliage. The fat white flowers are not as pretty as the orange ones, but they are interesting.

I have no idea how they grow, and have only seen them as a cut flower. Itnis not a plant that would survive in our climat. Thanks for the explanation

We call this Bird of Paradise. We had one in a huge pot in our home in the frozen northland of northern Indiana, and it actually bloomed. We were very surprised!

My cat, Triffid, a long haired version of Tabby, loved it and slept under it for his whole life and even died in his sleep under it. ❤

Triffid is a good name for a cat. That would really be something interesting to have in a garden, and safer to sleep under than an apple tree for Tabby

I would say exotic. I certainly could not imagine one growing in Switzerland where I live.
