  1. They are big tough perennials. They are not easy to work with when the get big. If they get too crowded to bloom well, the only remedy is to cut them back, dig them up, divide them and then put a few smaller pieces back (and maybe share the rest with neighbors). It takes the newly divided plants a few years to bloom again. Consequently, no one wants to dig up big crowded clumps, even if they do not bloom much anymore. Fortunately, it takes many years for them to get that crowded! There is a giant strelitzia too. It grows up on big stalks, and provides exquisite rich green foliage. The fat white flowers are not as pretty as the orange ones, but they are interesting.
