The Lawn

A community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Ok, everyone, I live in a community. We all have burnt earth in the garden, those that still have a garden.  Once there were green fields kissed by the sun, but as the song says, they are now parched by the sun. This is my garden in our little village in Switzerland. It is a community and when you arrive fresh in the village it is a good thing to ask what can I do for my village and not what can my village do for me. Your want to fit in and meet people.

There were so many orgaisations that we could join, and I decided on the first aid group. P1020421
We would met once a month in the village and at week-ends might attend sports meetings to help with the injured footballers. Now that was fun, helping those strong legs to heal with applications of various creams. OK, they did it theirselves being the real men and did not need a woman to do it.  I never got the chance to apply mouth to mouth resuscitation, but if it was that bad we would have called for the professionals at the hospital. I enjoyed attending the evening beat groups sessions, rocking along with the rest and helping the fans to recover from their exertions on the dance floor. The photo is me waiting for the next patient. It was taken a few years ago, before I became  a golden oldie. Today I would be in need of help myself . Yes we villagers stick together and nothing goes unnoticed: births, deaths, marriages, divorces, you name it we all know it and often lengthy discussions will incur. Don’t you just love community life? We have a neighbour that ….no, none of our business. You just have to love a little bit of gossip now and again.

Now the talk of the village is what to do with our brown lawns which are no longer lawns and have become a product of the long hot summer with no rain. Now and again we hear a clap of thunder in the distance. Even the astronauts in the space station circulating above the earth find that everything in Europe is now brown instead of green. So what shall we do about it, is the earth gradually turning into a dying planet? Europe is showing the first signs, parched earth everywhere.

Today we made a decision to have our lawn removed and newly formed. We did it once before with the front garden and have decided to have something similar done in the back garden..

The new garden

We have lost our patience. We will still have our green border with the herbs, roses and bushes and the apple trees will also remain, but no more lawn. Our parched moon scenery will be a thing of the past and the cockchafer grubs with their root munching sessions will hopefully disappear forever.

  1. Lawns are overrated anyway and a nice patio is far more useful — and you don’t have to keep clipping it. Maybe you can get a barbecue and burn your own meat. The lack of rain is worrying for all of us. Half of America is on fire and I gather there are quite a few fires in Europe, too, though ours are so huge, I don’t think we have the psychic space to think about all the fires everywhere.

We got a tiny bit of rain last night, but most of it passed to our east or north. We didn’t get very much — a drizzle. It’s not time to worry yet, but it will be, especially since it is SO hot. The rain was supposed to cool us down, but it didn’t get here and even where it arrived, it just made everything even more steamy. It stayed hot. Gray, murky, and hot. Some summer!

    • Can only agree about the lawn. I have tried so often but it just doesn’t work. There are enough lawns in the parks to see. We haven’t had many fires up to now, everything is just dry and parched and there is no grass left to burn.
The rain is getting nearer. It is grey outside and slowly the storm front is creeping over little Switzerland. I think we are going to have a rainy night. There has already been some damage caused here because of the rain. and the hailstones. This evening we decided not to give the garden water.

    • Who knows? It is a summer that has broken all records in heat and drought for the century and I would not like to experience it again. We have had a water shortage with consequences for the farmers, their crops and animals. My lawn is a small problem in comparison

  2. It is so difficult because then if everyone paves, then the temperature of the planet goes up much more sharply, and there are no plants to support the bees and things when there is rainbest wishes to all, and I hope you get good healthy rain right now.

      • Our yard is just wild weeds, and I like it that way. It takes care of itself. Wild thyme grows wild and comes back every year, and the animals like deer don’t eat it. The bees love it though. We get tons of mushrooms as well and I just watch them and wouldn’t try to eat them. One today is the size of a good tea saucer or even bigger.

  3. Smart decision about the lawn. So many people hear have automatic sprinklers on their lawn. We have had so much rain here, but their timer goes off and the sprinklers come on–in the rain! Ridiculous waste of money and water. Your front garden is pretty and you still have flowers. What will Tabby think, though?

    • Our lawn was always a rescue job. It was fine for 2-3 Years and then the builders moved in and ruined it.mit Baganda to recover and we had the drought. Now we have given up and it really need a lot of water.
