Good Morning

Baselstrasse 27.01 (10)

Yesterday afternoon I did an excursion to another part of my area where we once lived. It is not so far away, but no longer in our village, on the edge of town. For a couple of years we had an appartment in this building, fourth floor on the left. This is the front side of it. At the back there is a lawn. a few bushes and flowers. It was quite a large appartment and belonged to the company that I worked for. We were there for a couple of years, but eventually bought our own place in our village just along the main road. It was in the days when we both belonged to the work force.

Baselstrasse 27.01 (11)

This is a view of the back of the building, but currently everything is waiting for the growing time to arrive. My lawn is in the same state of growth, low with brown patches in between where the builder’s boots flattened everything. Today I will spread some grass seeds around as it is supposed to be a rainy day. I just have to hope that the sparrows do not decide that they have an extra meal.

At the moment I am waiting for the crows and magpies to arrive in front of my window for a few photos. I have to do the shooting through the window as they fly away when I go outside. The wonders of a zoom lens, if I get it to focus in the right place at the right time.

Today it looks like a lazy Sunday and I am not sure if I am going anywhere. Since havig my wheelchair I just like to get out and enjoy some fresh air. And now to the housewife hobby of the day, cooking lunch. I have red cabbage to prepare and a large piece of ham. The potatoes will later be prepared. Seems like the highlights of the day.

Have a good day/night and enjoy your Sunday.

Horses 27.01 (1)

This curious horse decided to have a look to see what I was doing with my camera. His pastures are  behind one of the local road railway stations, so you have to know where to look.

Flower of the Day: 27.01.2018 Azalea

Azalea

The popular end of the year flower to have during the Christmas season in the home. It is apparently a distant relation of the rhodedendron, although a miniature version. We have something we call alpine roses in Switzerland. You find them on the heights of the mountains growing as a wild flower, also a relation of the rhodedendron and very similar.

Daily Prompt: The Inscrutable Cyclamen

Cyclamen

I will never understand a cyclamen. It declares war on me as soon as it takes up its position in my home. I give it light and love, I even talk to it. I had always had bad luck with cyclamen. They look at me in the flower store as if to say take me home and I do. This time I asked the assistant how do I treat this plant to ensure a long life. She knew it all, as it was probably not the first time she had to give instructions.

Above all, do not give it too much water and from below and not from the top. Now it was clear, all my previous cyclamen had been given too much water boarding treatment. I had suffocated them with cans of water, they could no longer breathe. Otherwise she said moderate light effects and talk to it regularly. She did not actually say anything about talking to it, but for me that goes without saying. Always talk to your plants: they feel wanted and loved.

And so this cyclamen entered my life and I really had good intentions. I left it alone for a few days and then I tested the earth for Sahara symptoms. It was a little dry on top and so I decided it must be thirsty. My plant had unopened buds and nice healthy dark green leaves, so what could possibly go wrong The lady in the shop said water about twice a week, and this was the first time. I submerged my healthy flowering cyclamen in a water bath, just a few minutes, and it sucked the water up happlily. Afterwards I drained it off and returned it to its place on the table near the window.

Soon came the time for the second watering of the week. I tested the soil, found it to be a little on the dry side and repeated the water treatment. Next morning I found the first yellow leaf. This did not disturb me so much as it had opened three buds in the meanwhile and produced about 10 new buds. I was convinced it was feeling good and happy and a leaf turning yellow is no big deal.

The next morning I had at least 5 yellow leaves and you can now see for yourself. The yellow leaves are outnumbering the green leaves. I have decided to now let this plant realise what drought means. I refuse to give it more water, even if it stretches its roots out for it. The leaves are still attached to the plant, but I am not sure for how long. I really cannot understand what I did wrong. Perhaps it is casting away the old leaves to make room for new leaves, although there are none in sight: just a hopeful thought,

I will never understand the workings of a cyclamen organism, but I will persevere. Perhaps it might resuscitate itself.

Good Morning

Morning

Looking for something to photograph first thing in the morning brought no astonishing results. We are back to a dull boring sky, but I suppose you cannot have the sunrise show every morning. We had a few drops of rain yesterday evening, but nothing dramatic.

My usual photographic tour to the shops yesterday had a small problem. I always have my camera ready for the event of the day and discovered it was not working. My next discovery was that I had removed the battery to recharge it and yes, forgot to re-insert it in the camera. However, where there is a cell phone there is a way so I took some photos on the way by phone. I discovered this is not a bad idea as no waiting for the right focus, just press and click and it goes quicker.

Road to Langendorf

Even the road to our next town of Solothurn was a good clear picture with a view of the tower of our local cathedral at the end.

Yesterday was day of big shopping for the week-end, although I noticed we had more time than usual. I was finished earlier with my daily stuff and we were back with time to spare and nothing was forgotten. No. 1 son is off to Zürich today so it will be just Mr. Swiss and myself, how romantic. The candle is already burning on the kitchen table, but that has become a daily habit. Since my wonderful daughter-in-law constructed the arrangement for me I always light it up at the breakfast table. Makes a good start to the day.

Since becoming a granmother almost 5 months ago I also get photos almost daily of Alexander the Great’s progress in life as my son lives on the other side of Switzerland. The great story this week was that he has had his first swimming  lessons. A little baby floating in an indoor swimming pool, under supervision of course, in a special inflatable swim ring baby size. He was quite happy, no cries and paddled his way around. I think this is really a good idea as with time he will lose all fear of the big water and who knows, we might have an olympic swiming champion in the making.

catkins 25.01 (1)

We are really getting strange weather for this time of the year, temperatures up to 14°C which usully only arrive in spring. The trees are already showing their pioneer troup of catkins and I spotted the first crocus in my garden this week.

Crocus

I took the photo a couple of minutes ago. It is not raining, the water drops are from the early morning dew. During the day the crocus opens up, at last the spring is approaching slowly but surely, although we are only at the end of January.

I will probably take a wheelie in my chair this afternoon, the weather remaining dry, there are places to go and photos to take. I have now begun to explore the byways of the area, sometimes not even going where they go to. There is always a photographic surprise around every corner. When I belonged to the walking population I never bothered with the small side streets, but they also have their charm, although now and again I do get strange glances from people on their balconies or working in the garden, wondering what a golden oldie in an electric wheelchair with a camera is doing.

And now I am on my way with a vacuum cleaner and mop and later will be doing some physical therapy with my iron. There will be duvet and pillow covers to be ironed which will be done to the accompaniment of phone in discussions from the Leading Britain’s Conversation radio station, or perhaps I will be listening to the American Jazz 24 radio station in live streaming.

Enjoy the day, it’s Saturday or when you are sleeping it will be Saturday. I will be back, a promise, not a threat.

Daily Prompt: Great Silhouttes

I am a little later today. Amongst other things I just watched the livestream showing Airforce 1 with Trump leaving Switzerland who has now also become a silhouette. It is really a big plane and so you can now have him again Americans. Did you miss him? Probably not. He was 24 hours in Switzerland speaking to other politicians and did the grand finale today with his closing speech which was mostly repeating everything he said three times and not only telling us how great America is (might be even greater without Trump) but telling us above all how great he is himself. They were the parts he repeated most of all. He even spoke to our presdient this morning, Alain Berset, telling him  how great Switzerland is as well. And Trump is a real expert on greatness.

So now to today’s theme, the silhoutte.

Silhouette Paper Cut

Making silhouttes is a hobby in some parts of Switzerland in the parts where they have folklore as one of their specialities. We call them “Scherenschnitt” which literally translated would be “scissor cut” and they are works of art. The cutters have a special small scissor and they cut carefully on the black paper to any pattern you would like.

We were visiting the Bernese Overland on the annual excursion from my husband’s company and you always get a few interesting events. This time we visited a lady that  cut silhouttes. She gave a demonstration of how it is done. Mr. Swiss worked  for the Volvo trucks at the time, and we were a group of people from the company. The lady said we could request a subject and she would create the silhouette. The request was for a truck. Otherwise it was all typical Swiss scenes.  As a goodbye gift we were all given such a cutting in a frame. You can buy them in a sourvenir shop, but they are very expensive as they are all done in handwork. The young lady that did this cutting signed it with the date.

I wonder if Donald Trump got one as a gift from the Swiss government. Actually he did not get any special honours in Switzerland as he was not here on an official invitation, but just to attend a World Economic Forum conference which he seemed to confuse with a Trump First conference. If I had a super telescope and it would be a clear day I could now see him winging his way to the North of my village, but the plane is now probably too high in the clouds. I have flown the route myself to the states, every year to England when my dad was still alive. You can even see our local house mountain from the plane as it flies past.

Daily Prompt: Great Silhouttes

Good Morning

Morning clouds

No special spectacular sunrise this morning. At first it was just a grey blue sky and now it is beginning to break up so it can only get better. It is far too warm for this time of the year. One of those January’s that everyone will talk about for a few years. We have had almost no snow this Winter and plenty of rain.

Yesterday was the big day in Switzerland. The Trump arrived in Airforce 1 at Zürich airport. Pardon me for talking about it, but I have not seen such a show in Switzerland for many years. Two days before he arrived there were demonstrations in Zürich and Geneva complaining that Trump is not welcome. The hills around the airport were crowded with plane spotters taking photos and hoping to get a peep at the big man.

8 black night helicopters were waiting to pick him up at the airport to speed him off to Davos, where the WEF conference is being held. He only needed one helicopter of course, so the others were an escort, or the assassins, if there were any, would have to guess which helicopter he was occupying. And then the arrival in Davos at the helicopter landing place. Of course a car was waiting for him and so they progressed to the hotel. I say they, because he was accompanied by another 30 cars even including two Swiss police cars at the end of the queue. Sorry but this is just a little exagerated for my taste.

Helicopter 25.01.2018

This is not one of Trump’s helicopters, although I am really not so sure. Yesterday afternoon I went on a trip in my wheelchair and heard a helicopter. I did not have time to change the lens on the camera, so it is a distant shot and not so sharp. The funny thing is that it is a black helicopter, not a typical Swiss machine and not army. I did not think further until a second helicopter appeared. They moved on, and then another arrived. Generally we see the rescue helicopters, the red and white ones, for people stranded in a mountain., but not so many. Perhaps it was just a coincidence.

Carnival 25.01 (3)

I took a trip along the main road as I had seen these masks when we passed by in the car. I decided to get a closer look. It will soon be carnival here around mid February and preparations are already taking place. This house owner had the idea of decorating his fence with various carnival masks. There would have been a better view on the other side of the road, but the pavement is not wheelchair conform, too narrow.

Berries 25.01.2018

I have decided I need new eye glasses. I had my last ones a few years ago and they are not as good as they were. I can still read, but can no longer thread a needle or other such detailed jobs. This time I will have to go the whole hog and visit an eye doctor first of all. The opticians always ask if I have seen one and this time I will. I do not have cataract problems, at least I do not think so: no blurry spot in the middle of the eye, just bad sight. So first of all a visit to the doc and afterwards the opticians. How I hate these interruptions to my normal daily life. One of the problems of being a golden oldie.

So now I will move on, it is Friday: the week-end shopping day. The list is made and we more or less know what we want to eat. See you around some time and have a nice day. I will leave you with a bird meeting in my garden opposite my kitchen window.
