It was at the beginning of the season at the end of August when the heather was fresh in the store and not yet showing its normal well developed flowers.

That was another cut flower crop near my Pa’s home in Montara. There were fields of heather in rows that are now abandoned. They are quite big and a fire hazard now.

It is quite popular as a potted plant in Autumn, although there is often a cheaper similar version known as calluna

Those in Montara are very old. If you know Diego Rivera, the cut flower crops were from his time. (He was the Mexican Impressionist who painted people harvesting flower crops around in Montara and other places around San Francisco.)

Did you know that our corner of the world has 600 indigenous species of Erica, as we call them?

We call them also Erica in Switzerland. They grow naturally here as well, but not in the area where I live, just in gardens. I did not realise there were so many species.
