Who says that these figures are not elegant. In their world of star wars they were the latest trend and why, because they were all dressed the same. They had to wear protective clothing. No-one had to be ashamed that they were out of place, they melted in with the others, which is what we all basically want.
Ok, we do not walk around looking like Darth Vader from starwars, but if you went shopping with high heels, a tailored costume and perhaps a fur coat on top of it all when in Winter, you definitely would be noticed. People might even have a quiet giggle behind your back, unless you were attending a wedding. Even on party invitations today there is often the little sentence at the end “casual clothing required” which leaves many open questions. It means that the men do not reqired a tie and the ladies can dress in comfortable trousers,with a blouse or a t-shirt in modern design. If the weather is not so warm, then you can even wear a hoodie. Just make sure that the basics are in black, or something that matches the blue jeans you are wearing.
When you venture into the street dressed in blue jeans, a zip up quilted jacket preferably in black and of course sneakers on your feet you will not be laughed at, you will melt in with the crowd and that is basically what most of us want. The fur coat has been replaced by the quilted jackets, they are warm and comfortable.
Being a golden oldie I never really go anywhere that requires elegance. I go to supermarkets and we all dress the same. Trousers, jacket, sneakers or perhaps boots in Winter. Elegance for me does not come into the question, but comfort. A big plus in summer is the loose fitting dress. The one that does not have a waistline, but floats in the fresh air, as colourful as possile. You might look a little overweight, but why hide it, you are overweight.
I no longer want elegance, I just want to fit in with the crowd, which eveyone else also seems to be doing. The days of George Orwell have now arrived. Dress as the others do, and you will not be noticed and who wants to be noticed. Of course if you happen to be wearing designer jeans or a t-shirt it does help. For that you will be admired. Even daily appearances have their touch of elegance when people notice that you have not bought the t-shirt in a special offer in the local store.

Exactly! Yesterday I was a little stressed because I haven’t had — for years! — “nice’ winter clothing. Didn’t need in CA and haven’t bought any since I moved back to Colorado. I DO have a suit for summer (spring, fall) but not for 0 C or lower. SO to go to the Messiah, I put on my least faded red jeans, a black cashmere sweater and my leather jacket left over from the days of skirts, shirts and that coat. OH! I wore my Michel Jordi shoes! 🙂 Once there, I found myself smack in the middle of elegant dress for the San Luis Valley on a Sunday afternoon listening to Handel. My neighbors were higher on the elegance scale, but their lives require a bit more elegance than does mine.

When I was younger (yes there was a time) I would often go to the opera, go dancing and then we actrually wore dresses and nylons and high heeled shoes. I would really feel out of place today wearing something like that. The last time when I really went for it was my son’s wedding in German, but he seemed to have married the complete village, so it was a big occasion. I really looked good, but since then (a couple of years ago) I have never wore the clothes I wore at the wedding. Now we will have a christening some time, but I am already dressed for that. I so dislike dressing up. I am sure you looked great at the concert, not everyone has Michel Jordi shoes. I have a Michel Jordi watch of the ethnic Swiss series, Kanton Schwyz.

I’m with you on this one. I never had the desire to stand out in the crowd and I definetely prefere to feel comfortable.

Writing this got me thinking. Just take a look around you in the store, we are all wearing the same generally. Similar colours, dark usually black, a jacket and trousers. Who wears a dress today, I would feel really strange.

I used to wear elegant clothes or dressed up at least, until I moved to the boonies, where I was so “odd”. I finally succummed to blue jeans and relaxed wear. I still miss the days of dressing up, making an occasion out of dinner parties and gatherings. Having said that, I’m too old to care these days. A dressy pair of pants and top and I’m good to go. lol Those were the days!

i only wear comfortable clothes now and I prefer it. I am glad that clothes seem to have got more practicle. I cannot remember when I last wore a dress or skirt.

I want to be comfortable and everything has to be washable. Dry cleaning? I think not. In summer, I wear sandals and all winter, boots — usually Uggs or something like them which, though expensive, could not by anyone’s standards be called elegant. But they are very warm and comfortable. Loose dresses in summer, Warm dresses in the house in the winter, pants, sweater, coat or jacket, gloves, scarf … well, we do wear kind of a lot of clothing in the winter!

Comfort is the main thing. The only difference at Home for me between summer and winter. Is that I wear shorts in summer otherwise always a t-shirt. We have a good central heating system.. Shoes are mainly sketchers, they also do boots. I find them comfortable.. I rarely wear a dress, it’s all trousers or bermudas. Comfort is the main thing.
