  1. It is red fountain grass, Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’; but ‘reed’ sure got my attention. While trying to select a ‘town flower’ for Los Gatos, we wanted something either native or of cultural significance. Cat tail reeds were one of the options because they happen to be native to the marsh that used to be where Los Gatos Creek flows out of the Santa Cruz Mountains and into the Santa Clara Valley. We like that they are ‘cat tails’ because Los Gatos is Spanish for ‘The Cats’.

      • Brent has a very serious problem with feral kittens right next door to his exquisite home garden, so “die Katzen” might have a certain appeal! He says that Los Gatos is Spanish for ‘the Ghettos’ though.
