Growing up, my grandmother used to drag me to funerals with her. I hated it. The common factor of all of these funerals were carnations…. the standing arrangements always had carnations in them. To this day, I can’t smell one without thinking about death. It’s not an ugly flower, it’s just the smell I can’t get past.

I can understand that . I remember when my grand father died. He lived in the same house as we did. Thevsmell,of flowers was everywhere.

My grandmother once told me a story about my great grandfather, her father. We had moved from NY to NC and we lived in “the family house”. She decides to tell a 10 year old girl about how when her father died they laid him out in our then living room for the wake. I didn’t need to know that LOL. I’ve yet to forget that.

Carnations are probably still the second main cut flower crop here, after roses. Most are white, and dyed accordingly. (I always thought that was rather weird.) It takes a lot of work to grow those big single carnations!

I have only had the smaller variety but they do not last long in my garden so I gave up. I prefer roses.

I prefer to grow roses in my own garden too, but I would not want to grow either as a cut flower crop. They are so much work.

Of course! I cut many flowers when I lived in town because the garden was not visible from so many of the windows.
