As you say proverbially, but they do announce it when the train might be arriving later, meaning you will,probably miss your next connection

This is THE classic waiting. I can’t imagine how many hours in my life were spent waiting for a bus or a train … or an airline. Days. Maybe weeks!

I’m like you: I always want to be early! Haven’t ridden on any trains lately, even visiting France, as there I have my s-i-l to drive me around. 🙂 When they lived in Provence, I used to fly into Paris and then take the TGV to Avignon, so I waited for the train there. Now that I think about it, last year when I visited, our flight from Frankfurt to Basel was cancelled, so we ended up taking the TGV instead to Belfort.

I used to fly once a year to visit my dad in London. Until I got to the local station I was so nervous. Afterwards I had no problems when the journey began. I no longer travel so much just locally or in Switzerland.
