Soon it will be time for harvesting the vineyards. I took this photo last week-end in the Swiss Kanton of Shaffhausen and the grapes are nearly ready. At the moment they are still green, but will soon turn blue for the red wine.

I love arbors and those heavily hanging grapes. So they start out green and turn purple when ripe? Do green grapes start out purple, then turn green?

I only realised it because there were a couple of blue grapes on the green vine and my son has such a vine in his garden. At the moment it is mainly green, but turning slowly blue. Green grapes stay green as far as I know. I will have to ask his wife, hr job was cellar master, she is oenologe – from a family of vineyard owners in the Moselarea of Germany.

Wine is quite a big thing in some parts of Switzerland and when the harvest begins there are many celebrations in the villages.
