Daily Prompt: It must be tender

Meat

“So Joey, today is a special day in our meat department, you will learn something special in your apprenticeship, Mr. Mordrach and his wife Morticia will be arriving, one of our best customers.”

“What’s so special about them Mr. Rip.”

“The Mordrach family are  conoisseeurs. They only select the best meat and cuts, the most tender pieces.”

“Is that why you have put our raw meat specialities in the display fridge.”

“Of course, they know what they want and need. Here they come.

Morning Mr. and Mrs. Mordrach, early this morning?”

“Good morning Mr. Rip, my favourite butcher. Well you know how it is, the early vulture always catches the scorpion and we make the most of the dark mornings, don’t we dear?”

“Of course Vlad. When the kids are at last sleeping after a full nights rampage,  we can get away.”

“Joey, come here. Mr. Mordrach would like to see our best pieces.”

“Of course boss.”

“Oh, is this your new apprentice? Another youth learning the benefits of freshly killed meat. I must say he is looking very delicious, don’t you think so my dear.”

“Vlad, you are embarrassing the boy, look how he is blushing around the face.”

“That is very positive Morticia. Shows that his blood circulation is perfect and will flow freely. So what do we have here, rib eye or a nice dark red steak. I assume this is fresh kill?”

“Yes sir, Mr. Mordrake, altough we like to put it into freeze for a few weeks to make it more tender.”

“I see, would you have something a little younger.”

“Younger? I will ask the Mr. Rip.”

“Yes Mr.Mordrake, of course, but it is freshly hanging in the cold store and not yet completely dried out.”

“No problem, could we perhaps have a look? Morticia stay calm and stop licking your lips like that, what will the nice butcher and his apprentice think of us?”

“Sorry Vlad, but it is so exciting when we go to the cold store. The atmosphere and the smells, and the softness of the meat.”

“Yes well do not overdo it Morticia, the sun will rise in 30 minutes so we have plenty of time.”

“Joey show Mr. Mordrake the latest delivery from the slaughterhouse.”

“Of course, that would be a selection of liver, still fresh.”

“Oh yes wonderful Joey. Your name is Joey? It makes it so much more personal when I know who my next victim, sorry, butcher apprentice is called. I think you can leave us to get on with it now Mr. Rip with your wonderful tender new apprentice and you know our love of liver, so easy to chew.”

“Are you sure, otherwise I can always stay to help you.”

“Not necessary, I am sure that Joey and us will get on like hell, sorry a house, on fire. Morticia contain yourself, stop stroking Joey’s neck, you are embarrassing him.”

“But it is so tender.”

“It is OK Mr. Mordrake. Mr. Rip said I should fulfil any wishes you have.”

“Really, well in that case, Morticia, ladies first.”

Just as the sun was rising Mr. and Mrs. Mordrake left the butchers shop. Morticia and Vlad both satisfied with their newest purchases, after all it would be a special evening meal to celebrate the full moon.

And Joey? Mr. Rip had to find a new apprentice. Joey had somehow disappeared. It was a nuiscance. Whenever the Mordrake family arrived for  their meat for full moon celebrations, he needed a new apprentice. Luckily his pet dog Bloodwolf, would lick the floor of the cold room nice and clean afterwards.

  1. I would say Mr. Rip is lucky that his customers like young and tender meat. Also that his shop seems able to supply the wished for selections. It would be terrible if Mordrake’s had to make due with an older and tougher selection of meat before patronising another shop of the same type. Hugs
