Daily Prompt: The Temptations of a Golden Oldie

Apple Tart

I was looking forward to it, a piece of the special Mr. Swiss apple flan topped with whipped cream, or should I say whippd cream with a bottom layer of apple flan. It makes no difference how you say it, the temptation remains the same. This was what encouraged me to leave my bed after my midday golden oldie sleep. What does an old lady have, if she cannot enjoy a nice piece of apple flan. I borrowed that one from my mum actually. Every time cigarettes got more expensive, she would take up arms for the golden oldies and remark “what does an old boy have if he cannot afford his cigarettes”. Somewhere I felt she had got the wrong end of the argument, but with mum you did not argue. She was always right, seeing the world from her own perspective.

This piece of flan was my only temptation today. It is snowing outside, so I am not tempted to go out in it, just take a few photos from the safety of home and be glad that I do not have to go places and do things.

Temptations are so easy to fulfil today. I found myself surfing through the web sites I like to visit, just to see what was new. I am talking real business and not Facebook or Twitter. Facebook  is slowly becoming a showcase of “look at my photos”, “look what I had for dinner” and “look what I did today”. We used to write it all down in a private diary and stick the photos in an album to show at family gatherings. Now you get it all online, in glorious technicolour. I took part in at least four Chrismas Dinners as well as sharing many Chrismas trees and the gifts around them. Now that christmas has gone, normality is moving in and I can try at least 20 different varieies of pizza with as many toppings, all nicely filmed to make it easy to copy. I also noticed an advertisement for a nice pair of slippers, you know the shoes you wear at home, but would not be seen dead in outside. They are red and have a nice white nylon furry edge around the top –  perfect for sitting at the computer.

I must admit I do indulge in temptations. Most of them are now online for me, being a lazy golden oldie and not wanting to tramp around the stores looking for stuff I do not really need. I find myself visiting web sites from various elecronic places. Is there something new in the camera line? What does Apple have to offer in new devices and what’s the offer on a new camera lens. They are safe temptations, because you can do it all from home. Just keep your hands away from typing credit card details and actually ordering the stuff. Often you do not have to make a search, the companies come to you, especially if you have once ordered something. You are now on their books and registered and your details appear automatically if you place an order.

I think I will go fetch another piece of whipped cream with some cake. That is safe, costs nothing, and no good letting it go to waste. It’s snowing outside in any case.

  1. Mmmh – what is more cosy than having some still slightly warm apple tart with cream, a cuppa and looking out at some snowy fields? Doing that while your purring cat lies next to you, that’s what is more cosy.

    • You have a good point, although the apple tart is from yesterday and no longer warm. I just saw the neighbour leave with her two kids, aged 2 and 4 for their first sleighing experiences. Now they are sailing down the slopes and having fun. I now treasure the moments when I no longer have to do anything, but do what I want to, Watching those kids is enough fun for me now.

    • I suppose it is a cake, have got lost in translation. It is a pastry shell filled with apple, topped with a cream-egg custard with sugar and cinammon to flavour and baked in the oven. You can make it with any fruit, and if we do not have apples, Mr. Swiss will do it with lemon juice – to be hight recommended.

  2. Anyone who is human would want a piece of that flan!

As for the slippers, my secret has long become public knowledge. I get pairs of them as gifts from friends. I have at least four pair, each softer and more comfy than the last. At least everyone stopped giving me briefcases for work I no longer do 🙂

    • No-one gives me anything these days, Probably becauseI stopped birthday and christmas gifts. What you do not give, you cannot expect in return, but I am glad. No need to go searching for stuff for the others. I always wear the comfortable Sketchers shoes. I have the home version and the away version – it does me.

    • Sorry, I had the penultimate piece, and my son took the last – there is none left. The next one is programmed for over the week-end, because I noticed Mr. Swiss put pastry on the cloud list.
