Feldbrunnen to Langendorf 21.12 (36)

I suppose those ladders are one way of reaching the top when you are building.

And the circus came to town over the Christmas holidays.

Noticed these stairs as we were driving past. Unfortunately a tree got in the way, but they seem to grow everywhere where we live.

    • We do not have a Christmas carnival. It is an annual event in Switzerland (also Germany and most of Europe) that the carnival season takes place around Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, but it has various customs tied to it.

  1. Those stairs are a legal requirement in much of this country. We call them fire escapes and they are there for exactly the reason the name suggests. It used to be that often, a big building had just one exit from an apartment, into the hallways. Very tall buildings don’t have external stairs … one of many reasons I never want to live in a highrise. If there’s a fire, you are well and truly cooked.

All NEW homes have at least two doors leading outside, usually a front and back door — and up to a certain height — four stories maybe? They also need fire escapes. I suppose if you decide to live in a skyscraper, you’re on your own.

I love the first picture. It makes the contruction framework look somehow sinister 🙂

    • We had fire excapes on most of the buildings in London. Our school had one, and we had to do fire practice now and again. We had to assemble in the playground via the escape stairs. My No. 1 son was then at his special school in Swizerland, where he only came home at week-ends.They did not have a fire ladder, but the fire fighters would come with a lift and the kids had to get on the platform from the third storey and were lowered down – a real adventure. It does not seem to be law in Switzerland, but many factories have the extra exterior ladders. We have fire proof doors and there are notices everywhere about how to do it if there was a fire.
Next year we will probably be living under constuction framework, as our building will be 20 years old and time for renovations. The roof will be redone, the walls, and we will be getting new blinds. I am not looking forward to it very much.
