Flower of the Day: 26.07.2016 Echinacea

Echinacea 26.07 (9)

Echinacea 26.07 (1)At last they are flowering. I requested them from the gardener last year, planted them, but probably as they were new, I only had one flower each on them. This year is a different kettle of fish. I have three plants and they are competing with each other to see who makes the most flowers. I always liked them. They are no big problem, are perreniels and the longer you have them the better they grow.

They also have a medicinal use against bacteria, although it seems to be taken with care. I know we can buy a medicine in Switzerland based on this plant. They seem to have an antibacterial usage. I like them, and, of course the perfect subject for a photo. I am experimenting at the moment with my camera with manual mode. I think I am getting there somehow. I am preparing for my macro lens. Any advice is very welcome.

  1. Oh how pretty! I especially love the last photo. The colors are so deep and velvety and make the beautiful color of the flower pop.

You said that advice is welcome. One thing that I am forever doing in my flower photos is clipping off the petals at the photo’s edge. Generally, if I am isolating one flower for the photo, I want the whole flower in the photo. I get so excited when I see a pretty one that I don’t pay attention to the composition and get back home with a camera full of chopped petals. In your top photo, three of the tips are lost at the edge. I think it is a great photo and love how the full flower and the other flower center stand out from the green. Compare it to your bottom photo that shows the whole flower. Both photos work, but the bottom one is a better presentation. I figure you get as excited as I do and didn’t notice the clipped petals. 🙂

I look forward to seeing more of your beautiful flowers. Have a blessed day. 🙂

    • I took many photos before I got to what I wanted.Slowly I am getting into the manual mode of photography. Next week I will order my macro lens, I just want to be confident on how to use it before I get it. I have had my DSLR camera for a few years, even did a photo course, but neglected is possibilities for some time and now I have re-discovered them. My rudbeckia will soon be flowering, so I will be experimenting with some yellow flowers.

      • I look forward to seeing your rudbeckia. My yard is barren of flowers at this point. Between both flooding and a drought, nothing stands a chance in this yard. Even dandelions won’t grow in this yard. And I like dandelions.
I neglected to mention that I really liked your middle photo, too. I like how each flower leads your eye to the next one. Very nice. 🙂

What type of macro lens are you ordering. For the most part, all of my photography with the DSLR is done with a 50mm macro. I love it. I’m nowhere near perfect at using it, but it is my favorite lens. I have always fought through using manual mode. Sometimes I forget how to change this setting or that one, but they say manual mode is better in the long run. Have fun getting used to manual mode. 🙂

  2. Love the colours of your flowers. We had three echinacia plants which produced lovely flowers – the yellow & brown ones that are indigenous to New Mexico – but alas all but one have been smothered by first, the pomegranate bush, and then the impulsive verbena, which seeded itself alongside, and proceeded to overwhelm the echinacia. Actually if I let it, it would take over the whole garden.
